> Livin it up in Hell: I wanted a “ Ratt” type of dirty sound and riff. The build up to the solo was using a blues bottle on the Maverick and the solo was played on the Maverick. The main riff was played on the SG tuned CADGBE.

> Dangerous Enemy: I wanted heavy, subtle and simple. One of my more mature songs. All guitars are the Ibanez.

|
> Psycho Sidekick: I wanted a Marilyn Manson style heavy thumping riff but without the glam rock drum sound that he uses so well. No real solo as the song wasn’t about a solo but the riff. Originally too short so I spliced another verse and chorus into the song. See if you can spot the edit ! All guitars are the Ibanez.

> 70’s Retro: This is a total Zakk Wylde style rip off. Once again a slower riff , but as the song nears its climax I brought in a bluesy riff as a sort of bridge and then I took it a bit metal with a Metallica style riff and manic drum fade out. All guitars are the Ibanez.

> Heaven needs Rock (Cos Hell is on a Roll): Was originally intended to be an instrumental called “Rock Star”. (You can hear it without vocals after Symptom Of The Universe) I was looking for a classic rock riff. I was thinking of Extreme “Get The Funk Out”, or Limp Bizkits’ M I 2 theme and even Moby’s reworking of the James Bond theme. When I played it to Shaun he liked it so much he felt he had to put words to it. All guitars are the Ibanez.

> Dead Anyway: I love playing guitars in different tunings and this GGDGBD tuning is a favourite. It’s a very powerful riff and the occasional use of Wah Wah is very effective. A short song an attacking solo played on the Maverick and an atmospheric build up to the solo using a blues bottle with big vibrato make this song one of my favourites. The main riff is played on the G tuned SG.

> Subsidence: Again GGDGBD tuning but this time a serious effort to mimic Zeppelins’ “Kashmir”. This is a song that I am openly obsessed with and pay homage to it on almost every album I have recorded. This I feel is the best yet as the song is well constructed with great vocals and superb production. The solo was well planned and the dives on the whammy bar almost growl. Main riff is the SG and the solo is the Maverick.

> Trouble with a Vamp: More Mad Axe than D E F and a definite tribute to 70s Quo or AC DCs Rock ‘n Roll Damnation. Main riff is the SG in open G tuning with the classic R’n R solo on the Maverick.

> Symptom of the Universe: This is one of Sabbaths’ heaviest songs and was just crying out for a 21st century makeover. I only hope we have done it justice. All guitars are the Ibanez.
