“Dark Corridors” – Lyrical concept (or lack of it….!!)
> Livin it up in Hell: Up-tempo Ratt-style rocker. For those that think hell is on earth, then party everyday for the next say, 70 years and you’ll only have one permanent hangover at the end of it.
> Dangerous Enemy: This track smoulders with the intent that was meant when writing it. All about bearing a grudge and never letting it go until you finally get your own back (no matter how long it takes!)
> Psycho Sidekick: Ozzy wasn’t available to duet on this one, so Mr Ron filled in at the last minute!! Basically a song about schizophrenia, a constant battle with yourself (this limits the revenge options!!)
> 70’s Retro: People often say that they are a “child of the 60’s” (70’s…80’s…90’s). One of the themes contained in “Dark Corridors” is being caught in the 1970’s. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on which “child” you are, personally, it took me a couple of decades to wear out the flares, only for the bloody things to come back in again!! I’ll give them a miss this time out. Dawning realisation also features in this song.
> Heaven needs Rock (Cos Hell is on a Roll): Before you all climb aboard your various soap boxes, I don’t care one way or the other!! You can’t fool all the people all the time. In the movies, it’s the first time they make you jump that is the most effective. If you want something to be successful in a commercial/materialistic world, then it’s going to need great PR to keep it popular. (“Dark Corridors” being the exception of course!!!)
> Dead Anyway: Question: Who is Ed Dennyway? Some people believe in fate and a “grand design” others that we are “controlled” from start to finish. This song suggests that it’s better you don’t know one way or the other!!
> Subsidence: Ian is always looking for ways to re-write “Kashmir”!!! (Keep trying mate!!) Some of the “events” and/or states of mind you go through in dreams/nightmares. Chris, the studio engineer, was exhausted by the time we did this one, so he made me sing the repeats rather than find the right echo effect. This meant I had to take a step back from the microphone, one for every repeat, resulting in my singing the final one each time from the car park!!
> Trouble with a Vamp: “Powerage” era AC/DC, (More than a hint of “Rock N’ Roll Damnation”!) with a Joel Ellis (Cats in Boots) style scream thrown in for good measure! For those of you guys who watch “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and would “stake” everything for one date with “Faith”.
> Symptom of the Universe: Classic Sabbath! Our version is stripped to the bone, heavy and served with a garnish of grunt. Best savored loud.

It seemed like a good idea at the time…..
‘Songs we recorded for your displeasure’ (My musical nightmares):
She Is Leaving (From the album ‘Chill Out’)
To be honest this is more Ian’s nightmare than mine!!!
The lyrics are dreadful, the vocals are a shambles…It depresses me to even think about it but I do take every opportunity to remind him of what he created when I need a mood shift!!! To think, this was our answer to ‘Jump’ by Van Halen!! DOH!!!!
Dog Gone Rap (From the album ‘Cat In A Mousetrap’)
An abject lesson in not allowing the devil to find work for idle hands (or voices) to do…A daft idea that gathered un-necessary momentum and support at a point when the album should have been a wrap and we’d all gone home – We weren’t even drunk so there is no plausible excuse for this!!! Very silly without a funny side.
This Time (From the album ‘Unleaded…But still Metal)
Now of course you’re going to pick me up on the fact that I said I liked EVERY track on this album. I do except for this one!!!
A very, very poor attempt to create a ‘Hysteria’ (Def Leppard) style song. Vocals are painfully weak and I must have been listening to ‘She Is Leaving’ to come up with lyrics that annoying!!!
Hell And Back (From the album ‘Chill Out)
Oh dear I’m not presenting this album in the best of lights (I did say it was a challenging one!!!)
I’m not sure the vocals ever achieve the right key and the song is so monotonous that even on CD you can’t push the skip-track button quick enough!! It sounds like we’ve tried to copy ‘Start Me Up’ by the Stones – They would NOT be impressed and nor was I….
(The above is dedicated to those who belief I am too arrogant to admit when I’m wrong…..And to admit on Ian’s behalf that he was wronger!!!)
